Nothing special, just showing the daytime view of the shot below “Provincetown Tower At Night”, at low tide no less.

This was an exercise in long exposure night photography. I was basically playing with the manual mode of the camera, specifically the shutter speed priority mode. After a bunch of trial and error, this turned out to be the best balanced of the shots, most representative of what the eye saw that night.

The night was slightly hazy, having been hot and humid all day, but nothing like what was in store for the next day. The haze is evident around lighting of the tower.

Relevant settings of the camera were as follows.
Max Aperture Value: 5.0
White Balance: Manual
Self Timer: 10 s
Quality: Fine
Canon Flash Mode: Off
Digital Zoom: None
Camera ISO: 80
Focus Range: Auto
Canon Exposure Mode: Shutter speed priority AE
Base ISO: 79
Measured EV: -5.66
Target Aperture: 5
Target Exposure Time: 9.9
White Balance: Cloudy

I found 10 seconds shutter speed to be optimal, and the “cloudy” white balance mode to best represent the whiteness of the tower lighting.

Provincetown Harbor

Arriving in the evening of June 23 2010, I was greeted with this view of the harbor at the town landing off Commercial Street. I used my usual SX-10is in shutter speed priority mode, bring down the overall brightness, bringing out detail in the cloudscape.

I then very lightly processed the picture in GIMP, applying auto white balance, the camera tends to leave the blacks a bit light, and I have found this corrects that flaw nicely. I also applied “unsharp mask” to enhance the edges a bit, just makes the photo pop a little more. Scaling was then applied to bring the photo down to a more reasonable size.

I will be posting more of my trip to the Cape in the coming days.

Barnes Museum Iris

An iris in full bloom outside the Barnes Museum in Southington. Part of the massive rosegarden constructed in 2001 to honor local floriculturalist Nicholas Grillo.

Nothing special here, Canon SX10is in macro and “landscape” mode. Very light processing in GIMP to bring out some detail and white balance the picture. Almost unnecessary, as the Canon takes pretty good photos all on its own.

Barnes Museum Rose

A rose in full bloom beside the Barnes Museum in Southington. In 2001, the town erected a massive rosegarden on the property in honor of local floriculturalist, Nicholas Grillo.

Grillo is credited with creating several new varieties of rose most famously the thornless rose.

This photo was taken with the usual Canon SX10is in “landscape” mode, which brings out the greens and reds a bit more prominently. The CHDK software was not used save for its usual display and information enhancements.

CHDK Software

CHDK Logo

CHDK… Canon Hack Development Kit, is a bit of software for almost every higher end Canon camera to unlock its potential.  Though it has an unfortunate name, it is nearly completely mature, easy to install and use, and brings features to the camera not found anywhere else.  Also, it does not harm the camera in any way, does not void the warranty, and does not install itself permanently, just pull the SD card, and your camera is reverted to factory fresh.

I keep the CHDK software SD card installed in the camera at all times, but I also carry a blank SD card should I ever want to revert back to the factory settings.  I haven’t yet.

I will be discussing the CHDK feature set in this blog from time to time, but I mainly use it’s display additions, its scripting language (for time lapses) and plan to use its super long exposure times.

So if you own a Canon camera, or just want to check out the feature set, their Wiki is located here.

MWCR Railroad Trestle

Welcome to the inaugural post on my new photography blog!

This was a railroad trestle for the defunct Meriden, Waterbury & Connecticut River Railroad, one of the last railroads built and the one of the first abandoned in Connecticut.

A quarry on the east end of Meriden kept the right of way between its facility and the Amtrak / New Haven – Hartford line in downtown Meriden active, though not maintained until the 1960s. This is why this trestle still exists.

The camera was the usual Canon SX-10 running the CHDK software, though I simply used the Canon “Auto” setting for this photo.

Flickr Test

Testing the Flickr Blog This XML-RPC feature. In this area, I would write things, expound on how wonderful this picture is, how it’s relevant to something, and just plain how pretty it looks. This next line would lead us into the next paragraph.

This next paragraph, is just a test really, to see how the post breaks up, both as a paragraph, and when the space runs out on the left right side of the photo. I have no idea if I will like this layout or not, but we’ll give it a try.  Originally the left justified text broke at “give” and “it” so this line was hand edited via the Wordpress editor to fill out the line.  I could have also edited down the text to move the break to the left.  The strikethrough edits were also done in Wordpress.

And I would finally wrap things up here. This paragraph would tie together all of my thoughts and tie a nice little bow on them. So, as we can see, we can have Flickr feed my photos over to this blog, vastly cutting down on my work on this end!
